Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed, employees were interviewed and given a questionnaire, and an odor identification test was conducted at Dana Corporation-Spicer (SIC-3711) Universal Joint Division, Marion, Indiana, in January, 1979 to determine the cause of complaints of mucous membrane irritation. The company employed 990 production and maintenance personnel. The evaluation was requested by the Allied Industrial Workers of America on behalf of 58 affected employees in Department 256. Breathing zone and environmental samples of carbon-monoxide (630080), ozone (10028156), oxides of nitrogen, sulfur-dioxide (7446095), hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), methyl-chloroform (71556), and petroleum naptha (8030306) were well within OSHA criteria of 50 parts per million (ppm), cubic meter, respectively. A qualitative examination of bulk residue taken from the compressed air system revealed the presence of phthalic-anhydride (85449), a potent irritant and a possible decomposition product of the synthetic compressor oil. The company was informed of the problem and appropriate efforts were undertaken to rectify the situation
no exposures to irritants were reported as of March 22, 1979. Recommendations made by NIOSH include: cleaning or replacing the air supply system if new employee complaints should occur, protecting the worker who cleans the line from residual contamination, and providing a medical evaluation for any symptomatic employee, focusing on the possibility of hypersensitivity to phthalic-anhydride.
