Description:Breathing zone and general area air sampling and a walk through survey were conducted on August 7 and 8, 1979 to determine potentially hazardous exposures to styrene-monomer (100425) and methyl-ethyl-ketone-peroxide (1338234) (MEKO) at the Franco American Novelty Company (SIC-3944) in Hempstead, New York. An authorized representative of employees from district 55, Distributive Workers of America, requested the evaluation on behalf of 13 workers, but only one caster operator was potentially exposed to styrene monomer and MEKO. Styrene concentrations ranged from 2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m) to 13mg/cu m for personal and general area samples and were below the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of 420mg/cu m. Four MEKO samples were below the detectable limit, and one measureable sample (0.30mg/cu m), was below the TLV of 1.5mg/cu m. The author concludes that styrene and MEKO did not pose a health hazard to the caster operator and recommends that management should develop a detailed health and safety program for employee education on chemical hazards. Good personal hygiene and work practice should be observed by all employees, and better housekeeping should be practiced throughout the area. [Description provided by NIOSH]
