Description:On October 24 to 26, 1978, and June 19 and 20, 1979, breathing zone and general area samples were collected to determine possible toxic exposures to benzene (71432), trichloroethylene (79016), methyl- ethyl-ketone (78933), naphthalene (91203), total particulate, and dioctyl-phthalate (117840) at Dresser Industries, Inc., (SIC-3312) in Bradford, Pennsylvania. An authorized representative requested the evaluation on behalf of the approximately 50 affected employees. Battery operated vacuum pumps were used for sampling, and analysis was performed by gas chromatography. Two sets of samples indicated that main spray and coating operators were exposed to concentrations of total particulates (70 and 142, and 50 and 96 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), respectively) that exceeded the OSHA standard (15mg/m3). All other environmental measurements were within OSHA limits. The investigators recommend strict control of benzene and trichloroethylene, yearly physical examinations, personal protective equipment and instruction on its proper use, and improved cleaning methods and maintenance.
