Description:Environmental and medical evaluations were conducted at the Penetrant Inspection Department of General Dynamics (SIC-3724) in Fort Worth, Texas on September 28, 1978 to determine the effects on employees from exposure to water washable penetrants, wet/dry developers, and other related chemical compounds. Prompted by the sudden death of a employee whose work involved use of a mixture containing a fluorescent dye, the evaluation request was initiated by a representative of the department's four workers. Analysis of personal breathing zone samples revealed concentrations of trichloroethylene (79016) of 0.05 to 0.12 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), which were below the OSHA 8 hour time weighted average standard of 100mg/m3. After a review of the dead employee's autopsy and interviews with the department's employees, no medical evidence was found to link occupational chemical exposure to the employee's death. Histological examinations revealed no evidence of chemical or viral pneumonitis, chronic pulmonary disease, or damage to the lungs from the fluorescent material found in the pulmonary macrophages, and no inflammatory or degenerative changes were observed in the liver parenchyma resulting from the fluorescent material located in the hepatic Kupffer cells. Histological examination did not uncover any lung or liver disease attributable to other chemical substances. The authors conclude that no chemical concentrations exceeded current evaluation criteria. They recommend that food and beverage consumption in the work area be discontinued.
