Description:Breathing zone and general room air samples were taken for 1,1,2- trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (76131) (Freon-113) at the Digital Equipment Corporation (SIC-3573) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on August 18, 1979. An evaluation request came from an electrical contractor on behalf of an unspecified number of employees to determine the potential hazards associated with the use of Freon-113 as a greaser. Workers in the area of the vapor degreaser complained of chills, nausea, and fainting. General room samples were taken in all areas surrounding the vapor degreaser, and all workers were monitored for personal exposure. All samples were below the OSHA standard for Freon-113 (7,600 milligrams per cubic meter). Since smoking was not permitted at the work site, illnesses were not due to carbonyl-fluorides. The authors conclude that no hazard existed at the time of the survey, but the vapor degreaser was not working under optimum conditions when the workers became ill. When the vapor degreaser is working properly, no hazard should exist. The authors recommend that workers be educated on the hazards of Freon- 113, and that they immediately report any toxic symptoms.
