Description:

Herbicide vapor exposures at the Mobil Chemical Company, Crop Chemicals Division (SIC-2879), in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, were investigated on July 16 and 17, 1979, after a request was received from a laboratory technician. The facility employed 108 people. Exhaust air velocity was measured at 12 points at the face of four laboratory ventilation hoods and averaged. The velocities were 80, 60, 68, and 26 feet per minute (fpm) for hoods 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. These were below the 100 to 150fpm OSHA recommended minimums. No health problems were reported by five laboratory employees, but one worker, interviewed by telephone, complained of occasional headaches, sneezing, coughing, and objectional odors in the laboratory. The author concludes that the herbicide vapors do not present a health hazard, but recommends that the hood exhaust capacity be increased, the gas chromatography vapors be directed away from laboratory personnel, and the movable sash be kept open no more than half way until improvements are implemented.
