Description:Personal and area air samples were analyzed for toxic chemical contaminants at the Bayonne Terminal of Texaco, Inc., (SIC-2865) in Bayonne, New Jersey on March 20 to 22, 1979, following a request from an authorized representative of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union, Local 8-623. The relationship between chemical exposures and diagnosis of diffuse encephalopathy in one worker also was evaluated, and 9 workers completed medical questionnaires. The Bayonne facility employed 20 workers. Air sampling analysis indicated concurrent exposure to minimal amounts of a wide variety of chemical contaminants. Bulk samples of insulation contained chrysotile (12001295) and amphibole (1318098) asbestos fibers, and fiberglass and mineral wool. A bulk powder sample of an additive contained approximately 1 part per million of alpha-naphthylamine (134327). Workers reported skin and eye irritations, and odor annoyance. Information about the case of diffuse encephalopathy could not be conclusively related to any exposure. The author concludes that workers were not sufficiently informed of all hazards, symptoms, and precautions associated with the chemicals they used. An education program was recommended along with better respiratory protection, prohibition of eating in the work area, and identification of asbestos insulation.
