• Description:
  Employee exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (1336363) (PCB) was evaluated on September 18 and 19, 1979, at the Pierce Packing Company (SIC-2011) in Billings, Montana. The Montana State Department of Health and Environmental Sciences requested assistance in determining the exposure of 16 packing company workers following an accidental PCB spill in June, 1979. Air samples were analyzed, and the exposed workers and 16 unexposed comparisons were tested for PCB in blood samples and for skin irritation, liver function, and blood lipids. Average blood PCB concentrations were 6.44 parts per billion (ppb) in the exposed workers, and 7.50ppb in the unexposed workers. No PCB related abnormalities were found among the exposed workers. All air samples contained less than detectable amounts of PCB vapors (0.5 micrograms) and particulates (2 micrograms). The authors conclude that no PCB exposure hazard existed at this facility.
