Description:An environmental and medical survey was conducted in the Graphic Services Department (SIC-7333) of R. L. Polk Company, in Cincinnati, Ohio between June 1978 and December 1979. An employee representative requested the survey on behalf of 18 workers who were exposed to chemicals during operation of a newly installed platemaker machine
the workers had complained of upper respiratory problems, burning of the eyes and mouth, and skin irritations shortly after the equipment was introduced. Personal breathing zone samples, samples of the liquid premix toner and offset dispersant, and swipe samples were analyzed. The workers were given nondirected medical questionnaires, and one employee was skin tested with the undisclosed ingredients of the premix toner (Isopar G). The toner and dispersant samples contained small amounts of several polyamines and polymethacrylates. Average personal exposures were 11.0 parts per million (ppm) to isodecane (34464385), less than 1ppm to 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556), 10ppm to perchloroethylene (127184), and from 5.5 to 18ppm to methylene-chloride (75092). Seven workers reported irritation, headaches, and dizziness when the equipment was in use. The worker who was skin tested had a positive reaction to isodecane, and was relocated to a different work area. The authors conclude that no hazard exists at this company. They recommend improved ventilation, the use of protective gloves, and improved chemical waste disposal and storage. [Description provided by NIOSH]
