Description:Ventilation measurements and medical interviews were performed at the Shorewood Packaging Corporation (SIC-7399), Farmingdale, New York, to determine employee exposures to phototoxic chemicals used in a coating process, and to ozone (10028156) gas produced by ultraviolet lamps. The survey was performed on September 25 and November 21, 1979 at the request of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America Union, Local 1. No ozone gas was detected in the workers' breathing zone. Ventilation measurements indicated an exhaust velocity of 150 to 175 feet per minute at the point of emission of coating and ozone gas. Workers reported burning, swelling, erythema, and dermatitis of the skin following exposure to the phototoxic chemicals. Gloves were not worn by the workers and soilage, frequent spillage, and poor hygiene habits were common. NIOSH determined that an exposure hazard to phototoxic chemicals existed at this company. During a subsequent inspection, conditions had improved largely through medical attention, improved hygiene, and the use of lanolin after hand washing. NIOSH recommendations include use of protective clothing, impervious gloves, and safety glasses when using coating materials or machinery.
