Description:Personal and area air samples were collected and medical evaluations were performed at the Waste Water Treatment facility at Getty Refining and Marketing Company, (SIC-2911), Delaware City, Delaware, on August 21 and 22 and September 25 and 26, 1979. The president of OCAW Local 8-898 requested the evaluation on behalf of 15 employees to determine exposures to organic vapors, amines, lead (7439921) and airborne microorganisms. Personal breathing zone samples for benzene (71432) were all below the OSHA standard of 10 parts per million (ppm). Detector tube readings indicated the potential for intermittent exposure to ammonia (7664417), triethylamine (121448), and phenols in concentrations above current health standards in the immediate vicinity of the separators and aeration tanks. Forty five percent of the employees reported episodes of headache, eye and throat irritation, lightheadedness and nausea, but there was no evidence of chronic health problems. NIOSH concluded that the potential for exposure to benzene constitutes a serious long term health risk. Recommendations include: use of engineering controls to reduce contaminant concentrations
use by operators of respirators with organic cartridges or compressed air tanks when in the immediate vicinity of the separator, chemical holding tank, aeration tanks, and dual cell gravity separators
and continued medical surveillance. [Description provided by NIOSH]
