Description:An environmental survey was conducted on April 17, 1980 in the paint stripping area at Veritas (SIC-1799) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Management requested the evaluation to determine worker exposure to methylene-chloride (75092) vapors. The breathing zone time weighted average (TWA) exposure at the paint stripping operation ranged from 633 to 1017 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). At the sanding operation, the operators' TWA was 661mg/m3. Measurements of short term high intensity exposure ranged up to 4,880mg/m3 in the paint stripping operations. Workers reported symptoms of dizziness and tiredness. The OSHA criteria for methylene-chloride exposure is 1,740mg/m3 for an 8 hour time weighted average. The authors conclude that a health hazard from exposure to methylene-chloride exists at this facility. They recommend environmental controls, personal protection and medical surveillance.
