Description:Environmental and personal air sampling was conducted on November 8, 1979 to assess the exposure of histology and cytology technologists at the Emory University Pathology Department (SIC-8061) in Atlanta, Georgia to xylene (1330207) vapors from tissue slide preparation procedures. The evaluation was requested by an administrative assistant in the Emory University Pathology Department on behalf of approximately 15 affected employees. Six personal and four area samples for xylene and other solvent vapors were collected. Average daily exposures to xylene vapors were well below the 8 hour average OSHA limit of 100 parts per million (ppm). Short term exposures to xylene vapors were also below the OSHA limit of 150ppm for 15 minute exposures. The combined exposures to all the solvent vapors including xylene, toluene (108883), ethanol (64175), and isopropanol (67630) were well below exposure criteria. NIOSH determined that no health hazard existed from xylene vapor exposure. Better ventilation and improved work practices are recommended. Description provided by NIOSH
