Description:An evaluation of delayed neurotoxic effects from possible exposure to o-ethyl-o,p-nitrophenyl-phenylphosphonothioate (EPN) (2104645) was performed following an accidental explosion at the Stauffer Chemical Company (SIC-2879), Chicago Heights, Illinois. The explosion occurred on August 18, 1978, and the neurological evaluations of 53 persons were performed at an unspecified date following the explosion, at the request of Stauffer Chemical Company and the Illinois Department of Health. The evaluation included a medical history, clinical neurological examination, electromyography, and nerve conduction studies. Eight cases of definite or possible peripheral neuropathy were detected, but none were typical of toxic neuropathy. Methodologic problems with the study and low numbers of participants prevented a meaningful epidemiological analysis of the data. NIOSH suggests that in other EPN operations, Stauffer follow standard recommendations for pesticide manufacturing. Continued medical follow-up should be available to all workers exposed to EPN. Firefighting and rescue workers responding to chemical fires should be adequately protected. [Description provided by NIOSH]
