Description:Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on August 16 and 17, 1978, February 23, 1979, and August 15, 1979, to evaluate employee exposure to contaminants generated during spray painting and curing operations at Continental Columbus Corporation (SIC-3442) in Columbus, Wisconsin. The evaluation was requested by the business representative of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 565 for an unspecified number of employees. Concentrations in the touch-up painter area of benzene (71432) ranged from 0.17 to 3.14 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the 1ppm OSHA standard; chromium-VI (1333820) concentrations ranged from 17 to 57 micrograms per cubic meter (m3), exceeding the 10 micrograms/ m3 OSHA standard; coal-tar-pitch-volatile (65996932) (CTPV) concentrations ranged from none detected to 0.48 milligrams (mg)/m3, exceeding the 0.20mg/m3 OSHA standard, and hexamethylene- diioscyanate (822060) (HMDI) concentrations ranged from 34 to 192 micrograms/m3, exceeding the 35 micrograms/m3 NIOSH time weighted average. Concentrations of xylene (1330207), toluene (108883), 2- ethoxyethylacetate (111159) and heptane (142825) in the touchup painter area and CTPV's, xylene and toluene in the general workroom environment were within recommended standards. The author concludes that a serious health hazard existed for exposure to benzene, chromium VI, CTPV's and HMDI in touch up painter areas. The author recommends that touchup painter exposure be reduced through engineering and administrative controls and improved work practices, respirators be used in the interim period, a medical surveillance program be implemented, an environmental monitoring program be developed, touchup painters be informed of and educated about the health hazards associated with their job, wearing of disposable protective coveralls, hats and gloves be required and good personal hygiene be emphasized.
