Description:Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on January 15 and 16, 1979 at the Welmetco Limited sewing facility (SIC-2393) in Soul City, North Carolina to investigate occupationally related cases of dermatitis. The surveys were requested by authorized representatives of the company to evaluate complaints that approximately 45 percent of the sewing machine operators and materials handlers employed in the manufacture of military duffel bags had dermatitis problems. Investigators analyzed cotton cloth treated with a mildew inhibitor and determined that the percentage of the inhibitor dichlorophene (97234) in the cloth was within federal specifications. The amount of dichlorophene in the cloth samples tested was not of sufficient concentration to cause skin irritation or sensitization in test animals. Medical interviews with seven affected and three unaffected employees indicated that some of the affected workers had histories suggestive of allergic dermatitis. The authors note that dichlorophene is a known skin sensitizer, and suggest that repeated handling of the cloth might result in an accumulation of dichlorophene on the skin sufficient to trigger a sensitization with subsequent allergic dermatitis. They recommend that the Defense Personnel Support Center warn all current and future contractors of the potential hazards associated with the cotton, and that direct skin contact be minimized through the use of protective clothing and gloves.
