Description:Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on March 29 and 30, 1979 at the EAZ-Lift Spring Incorporated (SIC-3799) in Elkhart, Indiana to assess the arc welding operations. The surveys were requested by authorized representatives of the employees union, United Steelworkers of America, Local number 15483, to evaluate alleged employee exposure to contaminants from arc welding activities. Personal air samples were taken to determine concentrations of carbon-monoxide (630080), total welding airborne particulate, chromium (7440473), copper (7440508), iron-oxide (1309371), manganese (7439965), and vanadium-pentoxide (1314621). All concentrations of contaminants were below evaluation criteria. Two of the four exposures to total welding particulate approached the NIOSH recommended criterion of 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), but were still below the OSHA standard of 15mg/m3. During medical interviews of eight employees, three of six welders and the heat treating operator complained of upper respiratory tract irritation. The author concludes that a potential for welder overexposure to total welding particulate exists. He recommends that equipment redesign and a regular monitoring program be undertaken.
