Description:Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on August 23 and 24, 1979 at the Orlando International Airport in Florida to determine possible health hazards to airport security personnel (SIC- 4583) from engine exhausts. The survey was requested by the president of the Orange County Police Benevolent Association to evaluate exposures to emissions from automobiles, buses, and airplanes, which were reported to be causing respiratory problems. Area air samples for exhaust components were taken at selected locations along the worksite. Samples containing sulfur dioxide (7446095), were less than 0.4 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), less than 0.1mg/m3 oxides of nitrogen, and less than 0.2mg/m3 of respirable particulates. Total volatile hydrocarbons were nondetectable, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in concentrations of less than 0.2mg/m3. Breath measurements for carbon-monoxide (630080) were within normal ranges. Interviews with 10 employees did not reveal any common symptom pattern. The author concludes that a health hazard to security personnel did not exist, but he recommends that a more structured inside and outside work regimen be instituted to make working conditions more tolerable.
