Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed and worker interviews were conducted on January 3, 1980, to determine if dip painting operations were exposing workers to excessive vapor concentrations at Miami Carey Incorporated (SIC-3353) in Monroe, Ohio. An evaluation request came from an authorized representative of an unspecified number of employees. Vapors contained alkanes, ranging from 23.7 to 267.1 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m)
trichloroethylene (79016) from 4.0 to 11.9mg/cu m
toluene (108883) from 0.3 to 0.7mg/cu m
butylacetate (123864) from 1.0 to 4.2mg/cu m
xylene (1330207) from 1.8 to 10.3mg/CuM
methyl-amyl-ketone (110430), from 0.7 to 2.9mg/cu m
and cellosolve acetate (9004357) from 3.3 to 23.6mg/cu m. All concentrations were well within OSHA and NIOSH standards. The shot hood exhaust system was defective and subsequently was repaired. Two employees indicated they experienced headaches and dizziness when working near the dip tank for 2 hours or more, but when they were relocated the symptoms subsided. The author concludes that the dip painting operations do not appear to present a health hazard during normal working hours. The author recommends that open solvent drums and paint mixtures be located in a well ventilated area, and that the slot hood exhaust system be cleaned and inspected regularly.
