Description:Area and personal air samples were analyzed for concentrations of perchloroethylene (127184) and methyl-chloroform (71556) at 14 of 16 optical shops employing members of Local 841 of the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists (SIC-3861) in New York City, New York. Samples were collected between April 30 and May 4, 1979. A representative from union Local 841 requested the evaluation of 52 employees in 16 shops. Nine employees were exposed to concentrations of perchloroethylene ranging from 487 to 1,606 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) and one employee was exposed to concentrations of methyl chloroform greater than 7,195 mg/m3. These exposures exceeded the OSHA 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) standard of 670mg/m3 for for perchloroethylene and 1,900mg/m3 TWA for a for methyl-chloroform. The authors conclude that there is a hazard to employees from exposure to perchlorethylene. He recommends that airborne concentrations of perchloroethylene be minimized and preferably eliminated altogether by use of a less hazardous substitute, proper methods of solvent disposal be followed, contaminated areas be cleaned up immediately after a spill to minimize evaporation, adequate room ventilation be supplied and maintained, direct skin contact be avoided by using gloves.
