Description:Time weighted average exposures were determined and bulk and personal air samples were analyzed to determine employee exposure to concentrations of isopropyl-alcohol (67630), toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), ethylbenzene (100414), methyl-chloride (74873) and tetrachloroethylene (127184) at Looart Press Incorporated (SIC-2648) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The January 22 to 24, 1980 survey was requested by the company's Coordinator of Benefits, Safety, and Employee Communications to determine the extent of exposure of 48 workers in the plate making and pressroom areas. Bulk samples revealed the presence of ethylene-glycol-monobutyl-ether (111762), ethylene-glycol-monobutylether-acetate, toluene, xylene, alcohols and ethylbenzene isomers. No concentrations of methyl-chloride, tetrachloroethylene or propyl-alcohol were detected. Isopropyl- alcohol exposures ranged from 78 to 598 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/ m3), toluene from 3.6 to 47 mg/m3, xylene from 10 to 110mg/m3, and ethylbenzene from 0.00 to 36mg/m3. The author concludes that exposures are below applicable exposure criteria and no hazard to health exists at this time. The author recommends that pressroom employees be educated concerning work practice with solvents, all quantities of solvent be covered, smoking and consumption of food and beverages in the pressroom be prohibited or discouraged, and that further investigations into isopropyl-alcohol exposures should be conducted.
