Description:Breathing zone and general area air samples and personal information concerning the affected employees were collected to determine exposure levels of airborne contaminants at the RCA Corporation (SIC-7814) in Marion, Indiana on June 27 and 28, 1979. An evaluation request came from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 116 for a health hazard evaluation on behalf of 60 affected employees working in slurry rooms who were exposed to substances causing hair discoloration. Collected data indicated increased concentrations of an oxidizing or bleaching agent. On October 31 and November 1 a follow up evaluation of the slurry rooms was conducted. Analysis of charcoal tube and filter samples indicated hydrogen-peroxide (7722841) (H2O2) levels of 1 to 160 parts per million (ppm) by volume in the film application area. The OSHA criteria is 1ppm for an 8 hour time weighted average exposure. The authors conclude that the H2O2 found in the screen cleaning solution was of great enough strength to cause hair color changes. The authors recommend the use of protective head coverings, clothing and gloves and thorough showering at completion of work. They also recommend that the final film application area be enclosed to eliminate H2O2 contamination, that workers be alerted to potential contamination, and that a substitute for H2O2 be considered if hair discoloration continues.
