  Employees were administered a health questionnaire and environmental air samples were obtained for thermal break-down products including vinyl-chloride (75014), dibutyl-phthalate (84742), acrylonitrile (107131), butadiene (106990), cyanide (57125) and formaldehyde (50000) at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (SIC-3011) in Gadsden, Alabama on February 11 and July 22 and 23, 1975. An evaluation request came from an authorized representative of the employees to evaluate any toxic exposures to polyvinyl-chloride and plasticizers in the mixing, milling extrusion and curing of rubber sleeve stock at the facility. Sampling results from the initial and follow up surveys revealed either undetectable concentrations or insignificant or very low concentrations of thermal break down products. The authors conclude that workers are unlikely to experience any long term adverse effects due to work exposures. They recommend better control of smoke and volatile emissions, reduction of the exposure time of employees to these materials, and that substitutes be sought for vinyl-chloride resins and nitrile synthetic rubber.
