  Dermatological surveys were conducted in New York in March, May and September 1976, to investigate incidences of skin lesions on the hands and arms of paperhangers (SIC-2649) who worked with vinyl adhesives. The investigation was requested by a representative of the Paperhangers Local Union Number 490 of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades of America on behalf of the approximately 30 affected workers. The criteria for occupational dermatitis was met by 22 paperhangers of the 211 union members. Six of the 12 patch tested workers were allergic to one or more of three biocides or a defoamer used in wallpaper adhesives. The author concludes that the paperhangers' skin problems are primarily caused by either chronic irritation or allergic sensitization due to wallpaper adhesives and their ingredients. The author recommends that paperhangers with severe skin problems be advised to change occupations, that adhesives be mixed with paddles instead of hands, that gloves and protective skin creams be used, that exposed skin areas be washed promptly with warm water, and that proper skin care practices be maintained.
