• Description:
  Environmental and medical surveys were conducted on April 20 and 27, 1978 to investigate the possible toxic effects of a coding tape used at the Cal West Periodicals Company (SIC-5199) in Oakland California. The investigation was requested by an authorized representative of employees of Local 29 of the Office and Professional Employees Union. Alkane concentrations in general area and breathing zone samples ranged from 3.0 to 3.8 milligrams per cubic meter. Medical evaluations revealed no symptoms related to exposure to the tape. The author concludes that the exposures of employees to the coding tape is not toxic. Management should monitor employee complaints of symptoms related to the use of the coding tape.
