Description:An evaluation of possible health hazards due to chemical exposure at the Head Ski Company, (SIC-3949) Boulder, Colorado, was conducted by NIOSH. Dermatitis experienced by employees in the ski molding area prompted a study of the plant employing 300 workers. A total of 87 environmental samples were collected with a total of 357 chemical analyses performed. Direct trichloroethylene (79016) and noise measurements were made. All environmental measurements were below established Federal standards and the 1973 TLVs. Medical evaluations were performed. Patch tests of 3 substances (mold release containing methylene-chloride (75092) and chlorinated wax epoxy resin Dow-330 (25085998) and polyamide resin V-40) were applied to 12 workers with dermatitis. All patch test results of the mold release agent and polyamide resin V-40 were negative. Six workers with an average length of service of 17 months had positive tests to epoxy resin-Dow 330 which ranged from strong 1 + to 3 + reactions. The nonsensitized workers had an average of 7 months of service. Epoxy resin Epon-815 (29407849) was tested in one worker who had a positive reaction. The NIOSH investigating team concluded that the only hazard present at the plant was dermatitis due to direct contact with 2-bisphenyl-A type epoxy resins, Dow 330 and Epon 815 and recommended preventive health and safety measures for their use.
