  Breathing zone and general area samples were taken for polynuclear- aromatic-hydrocarbons (1330207), iron-oxide (1309371), manganese (7439965), copper (7440508), aluminum (7429905), zinc (7440666), oil decompostion products, xylene (1330207) oil mists and bulk samples of cutting oils were analyzed for nitrosamines and nitrosamine forming compounds at Melroe Division of Clark Equipment Co. (SIC- 3523), in Gwinner, North Dakota on July 20 and 21, 1978. An evaluation request came from an authorized representative of more than 100 effected employees. Samples for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were collected on glass fiber and silver membrane filters and analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography and a fluorescence detector. Iron, manganese, copper, aluminum and zinc samples were collected on mixed cellulose ester membrane filters and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Oil mist samples were analyzed by infrared spectrophotometer. Samples for all chemicals were below the evaluation criteria. The authors conclude that no health hazard exists at this facility. They recommend that currently used cutting oils should be substituted with oils that do not containing polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons should be used and that oil coated parts should be degreased before welding.
