  Personal air samples were analyzed for respirable dust and free silica (7631869) and bulk dust samples were analyzed for lead (7439921) asbestos (1332214), and free silica at Nab Construction Company (SIC-1711) Morgan Station General Mail Facility in New York on May 17 to 19, 1977. The evaluation was requested by an authorized employer representative on behalf of 92 affected workers. Respirable dust and free silica concentrations generally were below the evaluation criteria of 10 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) divided by the percentage of free silica plus 2, and 0.05mg/m3, respectively
  
  2 of 21 free silica and 4 of 21 respirable dust samples exceeded the standards. Concentrations of lead and carbon- monoxide (630080) were well below the exposure limits of 0.1mg/m3 and 35 parts per million, respectively. Workers reported respiratory tract symptoms, however these were attributed to contagious respiratory tract infections. The authors conclude that no hazardous exposures exist at this facility, but the dusts may aggravate inflamed respiratory tract mucous membranes. They recommend that properly fitted respirators be used and the housekeeping at the site should be improved. [Description provided by NIOSH]
