Health Hazard Evaluation Determination Report No. 77-125-547: Amphenol Cadre: Longmont, Colorado

  Breathing zone concentrations of methyl ethyl ketone (78933) (MEK), toluene (108883), and xylene (1330207) and general room air concentrations of 4,4'-methylene bis (2-chloroaniline) (101144) (MOCA) and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (26471625) (TDI) were measured at Amphenol Cadre (SIC-3694) in Longmont, Colorado on March 2 and April 20, 1978. An evaluation request was received from an authorized representative of the employees to evaluate the potential exposure of 20 employees to solvents and paint sprays used in the facility. TDI, MOCA, toluene and xylene concentrations were below laboratory limits of detection. Only one MEK sample exceeded the OSHA standard of 590 milligrams per cubic meter for an 8 hour time weighed average exposure. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard exists from exposures to MEK. They recommend that solvents be placed in safety dispensing cans, eating in the work area be prohibited, and appropriate warnings be placed in the area where MOCA is used.
