  Employee exposures to iron-oxide (1309371), welding fumes, fluoride (7681494), hydrogen-chloride (7647010), and phosgene (75445) were determined at the Budd Company's (SIC-3714) Red Lion facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 31 and September 1, 1978. The evaluation was requested by an authorized employee representative for an unspecified number of employees. Bulk samples of the cutting oil used in steel presses were also analyzed for nitrate (14797558) and nitrosamines. Some employees completed medical questionnaires. No nitrate or nitrosamine was detected in the cutting oil. No phosgene or fluorides were detected in the air samples. All hydrogen chloride concentrations measured were below the OSHA standard of 7 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). All iron-oxide fume measurements were below the OSHA standard of 10mg/m3. Workers reported breathing problems, eye and nose irritation, and dermatitis. The author recommends ventilation improvements. [Description provided by NIOSH]
