Description:Concentrations of isophorone (78591), acetone (67641), xylene (1330207), and toluene (108883 ) were measured in the silk screen printing operation of the Swinston Company (SIC-2262) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 12 to 14, 1978. The evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of an unspecified number of employees of the company. Breathing zone air samples and a medical questionnaire were completed. Concentrations of acetone, xylene, and toluene were all below published occupational health criteria. One isophorone measurement of 25.7 parts per million (ppm) was above the OSHA 8 hour standard of 25ppm and could have caused the eye and nose irritation noted by an employee. The investigator recommends that a respirator be provided until local exhaust ventilation is improved, a respiratory protection program be established, protective clothing be worn, fire hazards be controlled, and the floor fan be modified.
