  Environmental surveys were conducted on December 7, 1979, and February 1 and 7, 1980, to evaluate worker exposure to 1,4-dioxane (123911) at the Colgate Palmolive Company (SIC-2841) in Berkeley, California. The evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union, Local 6, on behalf of the approximately 70 affected workers. Analysis of the bulk samples indicated that dioxane concentrations, ranging from 0.000 to 0.423 percent by weight, were well below the recommended criterion of 1 percent by weight for an unintentional contaminant. All personal and area air samples for contaminants were below the limit of detection. The author concludes that a health hazard due to 1,4-dioxane exposure did not exist at the time of the survey. The author recommends that the company maintain ample supplies of protective equipment to prevent unnecessary skin exposure to the surfacting agents, that workers receive periodic training regarding the importance of wearing proper protective equipment, that the locker area received periodic cleaning, and that the shower area not be used as a storage area.
