Description:Environmental air sampling was performed, and medical questionnaires were administered to workers at the Western Electric Company in Ballwin, Missouri, on January 16, 1979. An evaluation request came from an authorized representative of the approximately 600 affected employees. Tests for the atmospheric presence of nitrogen-oxides, nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), ammonia (7664417), formaldehyde (50000), hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), ozone (10028156), carbon- dioxide (124389), and carbon-monoxide (630080) were positive for carbon-monoxide and carbon-dioxide. Both of these concentrations were far below the environmental health criteria of 35 parts per million (ppm) for carbon monoxide and 5,000ppm for carbon dioxide. Twenty four of the 66 respondents to the questionnaires complained of eye strain, irritation of respiratory tract, smoke odors, and stuffy air. The frequency of these complaints varied according to environmental conditions, such as extreme outside temperatures. The author recommends establishment of a smoking policy with a nonsmoking area, and an evaluation of the ventilation system. [Description provided by NIOSH]
