• Description:
  Exposure to harmful radiation was investigated at Sunstrand Data Control (SIC-3679) in Redmond, Washington, on July 24, 1980, in response to a request from the company management. Electric and magnetic radio frequency (RF) emissions from an RF heater used to preheat plastic compounds were measured. Approximately 3 to 5 workers used the RF heater work area. All radiation was below the OSHA permissible exposure of 10 milliwatts per square centimeter. A radiation leak was detected, but was easily repaired by replacement of a bolt in the heater lid. The authors concluded there was no hazard from RF exposure while using the RF heater. They recommend additional copper strip sealing at the leak area, turning off all equipment not in use, and careful maintenance. [Description provided by NIOSH]
