Personal and area samples were analyzed for the presence of para- dichloro-benzene (106467) (p-DCB) and polychlorinated-biphenyls (1336363) (PCBs) the Natrium facility of at PPG Industries (SIC- 2869), in New Martinsville, West Virginia, on July 11, 1980. The evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of the International Chemical Workers Union Local 45 on behalf of an unspecified number of employees. Concentrations of p-DCB ranged from 30.7 to 52.1 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), well below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist threshold limit value of 450mg/CuM and PCB concentrations ranged from undetected to 49.3 micrograms per cubic meter. The NIOSH recommended environmental criteria for PCBs is a time weighted average of 1 microgram per cubic meter for a 10-hour workday, 40- hour workweek. The author concludes that a hazard from exposure to p- DCB and PCBs does not exist and recommends improvements in the local exhaust ventilation intake, and the use of gloves by workers handling p-DCB drums.
