  Interviews were conducted and workplaces were visited to assess exposure to polychlorinated-biphenyls (1336363) (PCB) at Illinois Power Company (SIC-4911) in Bellville, Illinois, from February 12 to 14 and August 26 to 27, 1980. The evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 309, on behalf of the 66 employees based on reports of skin and eye irritation among workers. It was established that the capacitors maintained by the company contained PCBs. Linesmen who worked on the capacitors estimated contact with PCBs from once every 5 years to 18 times per year. The duration of exposure was less than 1 hour. Medical questionnaire data indicated a low frequency of PCB contact among linesmen and an absence of job related complaints among employees interviewed. The authors conclude that this group is a low risk group for PCB toxicity. They recommend that employees be made aware of PCB toxicity and the hazards associated with their use, that protective work procedures be adopted and that protective clothing and eyewear be provided.
