Description:Medical interviews were conducted and medical records were reviewed at a dental office (SIC-8021) in Alexandria, Virginia, on November 8, 1979. The evaluation was requested by employees to determine the cause of excess of urinary tract infections among female staff members. The office employed 21 persons. Forty women were employed by the dental office since it opened in 1976. Twelve of the 40 were reported to have had urinary tract infections while employed. Mercury (7439976), nitrous-oxide (10024972), and Cidex (111308) were used in the dental office but did not cause urinary infection. No relationship was found between job category or duration of employment and risk of infection. The authors note that the incidence of urinary infection in this population is not greater than expected in a population with a history of recurrent urinary tract infection. The authors conclude that there is no reported direct causal association between the chemicals used in the dental office and urinary infections. They recommend frequent voiding as a measure for the reduction of the incidence of urinary infections and that employees have adequate bathroom facilities available to use. If public facilities are not available for frequent use, the dental office should provide a bathroom for its employees. [Description provided by NIOSH]
