Description:Personal and area environmental samples were analyzed for the presence of nitrous-oxide (10024972), halothane (151677), and methoxyflurane (76380) at the Large and Small Animal Surgery areas in the School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University (SIC-8221), in Auburn, Alabama, from June 24 to 26, 1980. The evaluation was requested by the campus safety engineer of the university to determine exposure concentrations of waste anesthetic gases used to anesthetize animals for surgery. During routine procedures, a maximum of 10 and 60 students and employees are exposed in the large and small animal surgery areas, respectively. Exposures of halothane without scavenging, methyoxyflurane without scavenging and nitrous-oxide with and without scavenging ranged from 1.0 to 4.8, 1.3 to 3.3, 10 to 25 and 7 to 55 parts per million (ppm), respectively, partially exceeding the corresponding recommended standards of 2, 2, 25 and 25ppm. The author concludes that exposure concentrations are within acceptable limits only when scavenging equipment is used. The author notes that after a December 1979 survey, he had recommended that scavenging equipment be installed and utilized. [Description provided by NIOSH]
