Description:Respiratory symptoms among employees of the Public Employees' Retirement Association (SIC-8321) in Denver, Colorado, were investigated on November 24, 1980. A representative of the Public Employees' Retirement Association requested the evaluation on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Symptoms of burning and tearing of eyes, throat irritation, shortness of breath, and a burning sensation of the skin were reported by workers when entering the basement vault. Examination of the vault's contents revealed hydrocarbon solvent vapors from the ink of blank checks stored in the vault as the probable source of the reported respiratory symptoms. This problem was compounded by lack of ventilation in the vault which allowed the solvent vapors to collect. The author recommends that a ventilation system be installed if freshly printed checks are to be stored in the vault.
