Description:

Samples of lumber and work clothing were analyzed for hexavalent chromium (7440473) and medical interviews were conducted with employees of Spectt, Inc. (SIC-1541) in Cleveland, Ohio on February 15 and 16, 1981. The evaluation was requested by the management to determine the potential exposure of approximately 13 workers engaged in the erection of a cooling tower using treated lumber. Analysis of the lumber and work clothes for hexavalent chromium was negative. Analysis of wood shavings from the treated lumber revealed an average of 0.1 percent arsenic (7440382) and 1.2 percent chromium by weight. Of 13 employees interviewed, 7 reported occasional eye irritation, and 7 also reported that exposure to the treated lumber irritated open cuts or slowed the healing of cuts. One worker reported skin irritation. The author concludes that a health hazard was not created by the use of treated lumber in this construction project.
