Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for nitrous- oxide (10024972) and mercury (7439976) at a private dental office (SIC-8021), in Conifer, Colorado on January 8, 1981. The evaluation was requested by the dentist on behalf of an unspecified number of employees. Direct reading area samples revealed breathing zone nitrous-oxide concentrations exceeding 1000 parts per million (ppm) during anesthetic administration, and background concentrations of 200ppm approximately 1 hour after administration. The NIOSH recommended standard for nitrous oxide is 25ppm. Mercury concentrations were well below the OSHA standard of 0.1 milligram per cubic meter. The author concludes that a health hazard from nitrous-oxide does exist at this office and recommends the installation of a nitrous-oxide scavenging system, worker education, ventilation improvements, and routine maintenance of all anesthetic and suction equipment.
