Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for ethylene- oxide (75218), Freon-12 (75718), and phenol (108952) at the University of California's Moffitt Hospital (SIC-8062) on August 20 and on November 4, 1980. Medical surveys were conducted in conjunction with the air sampling, and a follow-up medical survey was conducted on October 30 to 31, 1980. An evaluation request came from an authorized representative on behalf of approximately 11 workers in the Material Services Department. All samples for ethylene-oxide were below the analytical limit of detection. All Freon-12 concentrations were below the California-OSHA standard of 1000 parts per million. No airborne phenol was detected in any of the samples. Medical interviews revealed numerous reports of nose and throat irritation, particularly among day shift workers, which may have been caused by the lack of air humidification. The authors conclude that a health hazard due to ethylene-oxide, Freon-12 or phenol does not exist in this department. They recommend medical examinations for certain workers, ventilation improvements, good personal hygiene practices for the workers, and other control measures.
