Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000), carbon-monoxide (630080) and carbon-dioxide (124389) to ascertain the cause of headaches, sinus irritation, lethargy, and fatigue reported by one employee at Fenwich, Stone, Davis, and West (SIC- 6611) in Palo Alto, California on November 6 to 7, 1980. Temperature and humidity measurements were also taken and the ventilation system was evaluated. An unidentified individual requested the evaluation for an unspecified number of workers. Airborne formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.66 parts per million (ppm) compared with the NIOSH standard of a 1.0ppm ceiling concentration. Carbon-monoxide concentrations were well below the NIOSH recommended standard of 35 ppm, and the carbon-dioxide concentrations of 300 to 400ppm were within the normal range. The temperature ranged from 73 to 76 degrees F, and the relative humidity ranged from 44 to 54 percent. Ventilation was adequate. The author concludes that the survey failed to determine the cause of the symptoms reported by the employee.
