Description:Environmental and personal breathing zone air samples were analyzed for n-hexane (110543) at Archer Daniels Midland (SIC-0119) in Decatur, Illinois on January 3 to 4, and October 20 to 22, 1980. An unspecified individual requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 28 affected workers in the hexane extraction work areas. Seven hexane extraction operators and three maintenance workers were administered medical questionnaires. The highest 8 hour time weighted average hexane concentration was 26 parts per million (ppm), compared with the OSHA standard of 500ppm. Long term area samples ranged from 4 to 25ppm. Short term area monitoring with an organic vapor analyzer revealed hexane concentrations as high as 1000ppm within one inch of a leaking door seal in the corn extraction area, but this concentration dropped off sharply within 3 to 4 feet of the door. Two workers reported transient paresthesias following acute exposure to high concentrations of hexane. One worker reported a localized skin rash. Dominant complaints concerned temporary episodes of lightheadedness and dizziness. No symptoms of peripheral neuropathy were reported. The authors conclude that a hazard from hexane exposure does not exist at this facility. They recommend methods to control hexane vapors exposures and to upgrade the respiratory protection and confined entry programs.
