Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for xylene (1330207), benzene (71432), toluene (108883), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), butyl-cellosolve (111762), methylene-chloride (75092), naphtha (8030306), phenol (108952), and ozone (10028156), at Graphic Color Plate, Incorporated (SIC-7333), in Stamford, Connecticut on November 30, December 1 and 6, 1978, and on January 10, 11, and March 29, 1979. Medical interviews were conducted with 21 workers. A representative of the Graphic Arts International Union, Local 90-P, requested the evaluation on behalf of an unspecified number of workers reporting medical disorders. All sampled chemical concentrations were below the OSHA standards of 0.1 parts per million (ppm), 100ppm, 10ppm, 200ppm, 200ppm, 50ppm, 500ppm, 2000 milligrams per cubic meter, and 5ppm for ozone, xylene, benzene, toluene, methyl-ethyl-ketone, butyl-cellosolve, methylene-chloride, naptha, and phenol, respectively. Medical interviews identified several workers with heart disease and kidney stones, although the high proportion of smokers and the age of the workers possibly accounted for these findings. The authors conclude that a health hazard from overexposures to chemicals does not exist at this facility. They recommend ventilation improvements, use of personnel protective equipment when handling chemicals, and good personnel hygiene practices.
