  Worker exposures to chemicals associated with the ITEK printing process were surveyed on May 12, 1981 at the Printing Service Department of Cincinnati General Hospital (SIC-2740) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Ohio Council 8, on behalf of four print shop workers who complained of skin irritation and dermatitis. A listing of ITEK chemicals obtained from the manufacturer revealed several caustic components. During interviews with the printers, the one employee who most frequently used the ITEK process reported blisters, peeling, loss of fingernails, and dermatitis on his right hand. During work operations, this worker was observed to use his right hand to apply the printing chemicals and remove the prints. The other workers reported only dry skin. The authors conclude that the dermatitis of the most frequently exposed worker is due to contact with the caustic printing chemicals. They recommend the use of protective gloves and good personal hygiene practices.
