Description:Worker exposures to welding emissions, exhaust gases, asbestos (1332214), solvents, and noise were surveyed on February 3 and 4, 1981 at the Department of Transportation (DOT) Vehicle Research and Test Center (SIC-8922) in East Liberty, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on behalf of approximately 37 workers. Area and personal air samples were taken, and noise survey data collected by DOT was reviewed. Concentrations of total particulates, benzene solubles, benzo(a)pyrene (50328), chrysene (218019), pyrene (129000), benzo(a)anthracene (50328), fluoranthene (206440), acrolein (107028), formaldehyde (50000), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), asbestos, iron-oxide (1309371), zinc-oxide (1314132), ozone (10028156), and phosgene (75445) were within allowable limits. Exposures to a parts cleaning solvent, carbon-monoxide (630080), and noise sometimes exceeded the evaluation criteria of 350 parts per million (ppm), 35ppm, and 85 decibels relative the A-weighted scale (dBA); carbon-monoxide and noise exposures also exceeded OSHA standards of 50ppm and 90dBA, respectively. The authors conclude that potentially hazardous exposures exist to the parts cleaning solvent, carbon-monoxide, and noise. Recommendations are included for engineering controls, limited work shifts, and use of protective equipment.
