Description:Worker exposures to hydrochloric-acid (7647010), zinc-chloride (7646857), fume, and carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO) were surveyed on February 17 to 19, 1981 at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation (SIC-3390) in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by a representative of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1238, on behalf of approximately 600 workers. Personal and area air samples were collected, and 19 of the workers were interviewed about work related health problems. Concentrations of hydrochloric-acid, zinc-chloride fume, and CO were well below respective OSHA limits of 7 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), 1mg/cu m, and 50 parts per million. Crane operators complained of eye and nose irritations. The author concludes that employees at this company generally are not exposed to hazardous amounts of the three tested compounds. Crane operators were exposed to irritative concentrations of hydrochloric-acid, due partly to a damaged gasket on the lid of an acid tank. Recommendations include replacement of the damaged gasket, inspection and evaluation of the ventilation system, and repair of the deluge shower. [Description provided by NIOSH]
