Description:Worker exposures to carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), and sulfur-dioxide (7446095) (SO2) were surveyed on April 29, 1981 at the Social Security Administration Office (SIC-9441) in Newburgh, New York. The evaluation was requested by the Regional Engineer of the Regional Office of Facilities, Engineering and Construction on behalf of approximately 50 employees who complained of objectionable odors. General air samples were collected, and air temperature, humidity, and ventilation were measured. No hydrogen- sulfide or SO2 was detected. Co concentrations varied from 2 to 6 parts per million during the day, compared with the NIOSH recommended limit of 35 parts per million. Temperatures ranged from 78 to 80 degrees F, but occasionally reached 85 degrees F in the data access room. Humidity ranged from 50 to 55 percent. The ventilation system did not provide adequate air movement. The author concluded that no hazardous chemical exposures exist at this agency, but the ventilation system is not adequate. Recommendations include modifications and improvements to the ventilation system.
