  Worker exposures to N-nitrosamines were surveyed on October 16, 1980 at Kelly Springfield Tire Company (SIC-3010) in Freeport, Illinois. The evaluation was requested by an OSHA representative on behalf of 1,500 employees. Air samples were collected from five different areas of the facility and were analyzed for several nitrosamines and amines. A significant number of air samples contained N- nitrosodimethylamine (62759), N-nitrosodiphenylamine (86306), N- nitrosomorpholine (59892), N-nitrosopyrrolidine (930552), and N- nitrosodiisopropylamine (601774). Also detected were dimethylamine (124403), trimethylamine (75503), isopropylamine (75310), N- propylamine (107108), diethylamine (109897), triethylamine (121448), morpholine (110918), and oxides of nitrogen. The author notes that no exposure standards exist for nitrosamines detected at this facility, however all of the compounds have been reported to cause cancer in laboratory animals and therefore may pose a significant hazard to exposed workers. Recommendations include the use of a substitute agent of N-nitrosodiphenylamine, ventilation improvements, worker education concerning chemical hazards, and evaluation of the contribution of dialkylamine based accelerations used in rubber formulations to nitrosamine formation.
